FTW Staff Picks - Joking Hazard
Over the holidays there was a clear-cut favourite that emerged among our patrons. Joking Hazard was both a top seller and the most frequently played game at the cafe. For fans of Cards Against Humanity and What Do You Meme? style humour, there is now a third option for laughs. Coming from the popular webcomic, Cyanide & Happiness, the various cards in the game feature our 2 favourite stickmen undertaking all sorts of inappropriate hijinks.
In Joking Hazard, players take turns acting as the Judge for the round. The Judge flips the top card of the deck and places it face-up in front of everyone. If the card has a black border, a normal round commences. The Judge selects one card from their hand to play before or after the card that was drawn. This is the Set-Up. Afterwards players will select a card from their hand to play as the Punchline for the comic. The Judge selects which Punchline will be the winner and that player receives their card back as a point. If the initial card drawn has a red border, a bonus round commences. The Judge does not play a card from their hand, and instead players will select two cards to act as the Set-Up for the Punchline. The winner receives both of their cards as points. The player with the most points after a predetermined set of rounds is declared the winner!
There's something to be said about the juvenile humour of two stick figures doing and saying asinine things. It's got that South Park charm to it. As a fan of the C&H webcomic, the various cards in the game are worthy of a hearty chuckle. Like most games of its kind, the laughter is likely to wear off after a handful of plays, but that doesn't take away from its genuinely funny cards.
As with Cards Against Humanity, there are a few expansions already out for Joking Hazard with more likely to follow. It's unlikely the game will have the same level of longevity as ο»ΏCards Against Humanity,ο»Ώ but for now its just as hot. We've already sold out of our initial orders, but it should be coming back soon. In the meantime, drop by and give it a test run.
