FTW Staff Picks - Jungle Speed
I first learned about reaction-based dexterity games when playing a little drinking game called Spoons. It wasn't the most elegant experience, but I doubt it was ever intended to be. From there I moved onto one of the most played games in our library, Ghost Blitz. A combination of quick-thinking and easy-to-learn gameplay, it's a game that can appeal to a broad range of age groups. And while it's by far the most popular of its kind, we've actually got a bunch of reaction-based dexterity games in our library. One of our favourites is Jungle Speed.
Jungle Speed is a game that tests the awareness and reaction speed of players. Unlike most games where the goal is simply to grab to win, Jungle Speed mixes it up with a few cards that add diversity. The core rule is that if your card's shape matches the shape of any other player's card, you engage in a Duel to see who can grab the totem the quickest. The loser collects the pile of played cards of the winner. The goal of the game is to be the first to rid themselves of all their cards.
However, along the way are a few cards that will create a bit more confusion and chaos. One card swaps the matches from shapes to colours. Another card forces all players into an Instant Duel. Or one that has everyone place their hands on top of the totem, instead of grabbing it. There's always enough going on to create an atmosphere of confusion, which makes it a great drinking game.
If you were like me and your first foray into reaction-based dexterity games was Spoons, do yourself a favour and try out one of the other (better) games we have in our Library. Jungle Speed comfortably plays up to 8 players and it provides a lot of laughs for anyone in search of a quick party game. If you love Ghost Blitz (and I know many of you do), but you're a little exhausted from its ruleset, Jungle Speed offers the same gameplay with a different perspective on things.
