FTW Staff Picks - Can't Stop
Dice rolling and press-your-luck style games have always been popular, just ask Las Vegas. They're all fundamentally the same, with a slight twist and theme to differentiate them from the rest of the market. Everyone has their favourites, and ours just happens to be an old school classic. It may not be as popular as Yahtzee, but Can't Stop more than makes up for it in style.
In Can't Stop, players take turns rolling 4 dice. From the rolled dice, they must create summed pairs to determine which numbered columns they will Run on. For example, if a player rolls a 3, 4, 5 and 2, they can decide to Run twice on column 7 (5+2, 3+4), once on column 9 (5+4) & column 5 (2+3) or once on column 6 (4+2) or column 8 (5+3). Once they decide which columns to Run on, they place their Runners on the bottom of those columns.
If the player chooses to continue their Run, they must roll the four dice again and they must advance at least one of the columns they've chosen. A player can Run on a maximum of 3 columns. If a player cannot advance on any of their 3 columns selected after rolling the dice, they bust and have to begin again on those columns. If a player chooses to pass, they can save their progress with their given coloured pylon. The first player to reach the summit of 3 columns wins the game!
Many press-your-luck games come in small compact packages. But Can't Stop is not ashamed of its relatively simple gameplay. Instead of simply using a pencil and pad of paper, players track their progress on a giant Stop sign. It's a brave statement of a package, and it really does add a level of dimension and excitement to the ordeal. I can't count the amount of times a friend has attempted to talk me into stopping my Run, and I simply looked at him, chucked the dice and yelled out "CAN'T STOP!"
