Star Wars: Destiny

Genre: Collectible Card Game

Player Size: 2 Players

Game Length: 30 to 60 minutes

For fans of: Magic: the Gathering, Dice Masters

For the first time in their long history, Fantasy Flight Games has released their very own Collectible Card Game (CCG). Prior to Star Wars: Destiny, FFG has been known to adopt the Living Card Game structure of pumping out fresh content for their games on a regular schedule, without having to buy blind boosters. FFG has really made the most of their Star Wars license and Star Wars: Destiny may prove to be their most successful and profitable use of the IP yet.

Like many other CCGs, Star Wars: Destiny is a head-to-head game where players build teams of various Star Wars characters and pit them against one another. To keep things thematic, team-building is restricted to two types: Villains & Heroes. Unfortunately, that means your dream team of Han Solo and Darth Vader will have to wait. Unlike many other CCGs, the turn-to-turn structure of the game is very streamlined and easy for anyone who's new to the hobby to pickup. No stacks or timing conflicts to worry about - yet.

Fantasy Flight Games underestimated the demand of the game, and initial shipments have sold out in an instant. Every restock thus far has also sold out. The craze is in full effect. But like all other CCGs before it, the true test will be time. Dice Masters started out strong in both sales and critical reception, but within the last two years of its release has fizzled out. It'll be interesting to track just how well Star Wars: Destiny does among the masses with appropriate production allotments. FFG is promising 4 new booster sets and 2 starter sets each year for the foreseeable future.

Priced right around the Magic: the Gathering price point, it's not the cheapest offering on the market. But the leap in quality over Wizkid's more budget-friendly Dice Masters is very apparent. With the next set focusing on the latest box office hit, Rogue One, it's hard to imagine the momentum slowing down at all. Over here at FTW Cafe, we've caught the fever. We'll likely be hosting some events for Star Wars: Destiny in the near future for any interested. Be sure to drop by!
