Most Anticipated Games - December 2018 Edition

Each month at For The Win Board Game Cafe, we take a look at a few future releases that we're really excited about. From new games, to expansions, to Kickstarters we'll be covering it all monthly.

Wingspan

A game about birds, Wingspan, looks to draw in fans of Terraforming Mars. A medium-weight card game all about building an engine revolved around birds. It’s got this bizarre allure to it. Even just staring at the box inexplicably draws me to this game. I know bird-watching is often joked about as an elderly person hobby, but something about this game tells me it’ll be one to watch for.

Wingspan arrives January 2019.

Dice Forge: Rebellion

Dice Forge gets its first expansion next year with Rebellion. The beautiful thing about that game is you can constantly expand it with new faces for the dice, and still maintain the games core mechanic. Rebellion adds two different modules to the game and some added boards for the Sanctuary. It appears the theme revolves around Gods and Titans. Either way, as one of our favourite releases last year, we are always down for more Dice Forge.

Dice Forge: Rebellion will be available in February 2019.

Legendary Forests

Legendary Forests is not necessarily a new release, but a localization of a popular Japanese game, 8bit Mockup. And while I wish they kept the 8-bit aesthetic of the original, I still think this one will draw in the gaze of most gamers. Legendary Forests is a tile-placing, tableau-builder akin to Karuba and Isle of Skye. With a simple premise that is reminiscent of many popular games, I can see this one being a great choice in the new year.

Legendary Forests will ship in early 2019.

Medium

If you have any friends who claim to have supernatural, psychic abilities you can now put them to the test. Medium is a party game that challenges players to see how in sync they are. Players are put into pairs and dealt a hand of 1-word cards. Pairs will then play a card from their hand and attempt to find a word to connect them. The trick is they have to do it simultaneously, hoping to create a psychic connection and choose the same word. If they cannot, they then try to find a word to match the two words they previously said. Players get 3 chances, and score less the longer it takes. This one is my choice for potential Party Game of the Year for 2019. Keep a close eye on it.

Medium is anticipated to release sometime in early 2019.

QE

Tired of restrictions? Are you the type who loves things in great excess? I present to you, QE, a bidding game that gives players a blank cheque and a marker. There is no limit to what you can bid. If you wanna write 1,000,000,000,000,000 yen, then you are free to do so. The catch is that each round the player who spent the most is eliminated. Blind-bidding is among my favourite mechanics in games of all genres. It can bring both tense and hilarious results. Much like Medium, I can see this one being a party favourite.
