Corinth

Clearly Days of Wonder is happy with The River as they have now teamed up with Jaipur’s creator, Sébastien Pauchon, for a second title with Corinth. Corinth is a dice-drafting game centred around delivering goods as merchants to complete various buildings in 4th Century BCE. Any gamers familiar with the game Ysaphan will surely recognize the mechanics. As a roll-and-write game, Corinth is essentially a dice-only remake of the 2006 title. For fans of Qwixx and Yahtzee, interested in adding some flavour to their game Corinth looks like a solid bridge.

Corinth arrives May 2019.

Super Punch Fighter

Tabletop games attempting to emulate old school arcade fighters is not a new concept. Games like BattleCON and Way of the Fighter are both great adaptations of the 2D fighting genre. Plaid Hat Games’ Super Punch Fighter is the latest entry into the niche world of tabletop fighters. This time around, players will be navigating an arena of hexagon-tiles, instead of just a two-dimensional plane. The main mechanic of the game revolves around pushing buttons and forming combos, much like you would on an arcade machine. The game even comes with a beat-em-up, cooperative mode where players have to survive waves of minions. The whole thing seems like a love letter to the 90’s arcade scene. As someone who just finished watching all of Hi Score Girl, I’m excited to see this one in action!

Super Punch Fighter is expected sometime in Summer 2019.

Blossoms

I’m a complete sucker for small box games, with tiny cards and gorgeous artwork. Blossoms (originally titled Kwiatki) is a card game where players compete to build the most beautiful flower bouquet. The game itself is a very light press-your-luck, style game that focuses on set-collecting. If you’ve ever played games like Coloretto or Circus Flohcati, you’ll feel right at home in Blossoms. It’s not exactly reinventing the wheel, but not all games need to be revolutionary to be a ton of fun.

Wacky Races

Only 60’s kids will remember this! And even though I wasn’t born in the 60’s, I do remember catching this Hanna-Barbera vintage cartoon on Saturday mornings. The show was later rebooted sometime in 2017, and it appears the company is trying to capitalize on nostalgia with a CoolMiniOrNot project on the horizon. I’m a strong supporter of more racing games in the tabletop world. There aren’t nearly enough, for a genre that has a lot of room for fun mechanics. With multiple game modes and the miniatures from the best in the biz, Wacky Races is a good bet to be a big 2019 title.

Wacky Races will be available in April 2019.

Rival Restaurants

About six years ago I was working on a prototype of a game I tentatively called Tu es Mangé. I made a print-and-play version that I tested a few times with a couple friends. We even got around to deciding on illustrations and an overall art style. We shelved the project for various reasons and I always thought about going back to revisit the project. To my surprise, I was browsing Kickstarter and noticed a game that had very similar ideas to my old idea! Rival Restaurants is a card game where players own restaurants and compete to develop their cookbooks and upgrade their establishments. Upon further review, the game was not necessarily the same but it certainly shares a lot of the same ideas. Out of sheer curiosity, I’m looking forward to playing Rival Restaurants. Because who knows, maybe one day Tu es Mangé will become a reality…
