Most Anticipated Games - May 2019 Edition

Each month at For The Win Board Game Cafe, we take a look at a few future releases that we're really excited about. From new games to expansions, to Kickstarters we'll be covering it all monthly.

Nine Tiles Panic

Nine Tiles Panic is a spiritual successor to the 2015 Oink Games’ title Nine Tiles. Players are still racing to connect 9 tiles, but there is more to Panic than just matching a pattern. In Panic, there are 3 Theme Cards drawn at the start of each round that award points for things such as “Longest Road”, “Most Dogs Visible” or “Most Aliens on a Single Road”. Each player then has 90 minutes to decide how they want to build their town in regards to those metrics. Points are awarded for how players perform in comparison to the other players in the game. It’s a small addition that packs a large change.

Nine Tiles Panic is expected to arrive towards the end of May 2019.

Clank! Legacy: Acquisitions Incorporated

Getting tired of Legacy adaptations yet? Well Clank! The Deck-Building Adventure! is the latest addition to the Legacy format. Clank! Legacy: Acquisitions Incorporated brings a unique campaign that is tailored to each individual gamer’s experience. And for those unfamiliar, Acquisitions Incorporated is a podcast/YouTube series of Penny Arcade folks playing a D&D campaign. As a collaboration between Penny Arcade and Dire Wolf Digital, this one may not be what fans of Clank! were hoping for but we’re still optimistic they can do the series justice!

Clank! Legacy Acquisitions Incorporated is expected to arrive in Fall 2019

Board Game Cafe Frenzy

I won’t lie, I selected this game just because of how meta it is to talk about a game with a board game cafe theme to it. Board Game Cafe Frenzy is a trick-taking game where players open up competing cafes trying best to optimize their success. It does feel a little like the theme was pasted on, as it often does with trick-taking games but the game certainly has charm. It may not make it overseas but it would be cool to get a hold of for novelty’s sake.

Board Game Cafe Frenzy is being sold at Tokyo Game Market in May 2019, with no current announcement regarding a worldwide release.

Geek Out! The 80’s/90’s Edition

If you’ve played Geek Out! before you know how great it is. And if you haven’t, you need to rectify that immediately. We are unapologetic about Geek Out! being our favourite trivia game. It’s the type of trivia game that really brings out your competitive side and pushes your knowledge to the limit. It’s surprising it’s taken this long to see more varied spin-offs but we are glad they’ve finally come. Geek Out! The 80’s Edition and Geek Out! The 90’s Edition are two separate titles that focus on their respective decades. Capitalizing on young adults’ knowledge of pop culture in those times feels like an automatic success. Kids of the 80’s and 90’s love to remind you how much their era was better than yours.

Geek Out! The 80’s Edition and Geek Out! The 90’s Edition arrive in June 2019.

It’s a Wonderful World

For most people a game that combines 7 Wonders and Century: Spice Road is enough to perk up their ears. It’s A Wonderful World brings that same civilization-building and simultaneous card-drafting of 7 Wonders and blends it with the economic foundations of Century: Spice Road. Backed by a solid art-style and presentation, it appears to understand what makes those games successful and hopefully bring them together in a fully-realized experience of its own. The key to its success will likely hinge on keeping play quick and not bogging things down with too many things to track. Early impressions look really strong for this one, so we’re keeping a close eye on it!
